    • The 1841 Census from a transcription obtained from an internet source Pro Ho 107 1136/18 Enu John Coney gives William Goddard living in Harborough Magna age 46 with his wife Elizabeth age 50 dressmaker and 6 children The list of children is not quite as I have it from the IGI but is substantially correct and William senior is identified Son William age 20 is a bricklayer still at home whilst John has married Daughter Emily (most probably Amelia) given as age 15 and Elizabeth also given as 15 she may well be Jane Elizabeth with an extra Jane added in error ( Jane is given as 11) Sarah 8 and Ellen 4 both check out Also at this address is Thomas West age 79 prob father to Elizabeth

      The 1851 Census gives William as living with his wife Elizabeth at Rectory House Harborough Magna
      His occupation is bricklayer age 57 No occupation is given for his wife age 60
      There are two children present (1) Jane Elizabeth Goddard age 24 dressmaker,
      and (2) Ellen age 13 Scholar
      There is also a grandson John Clark aged 3 listed there

      William Goddard is commemorated on a gravestone in the churchyard at Harborough Magna
      "Sacred to the memory of William Goddard who died 11th April 1856 aged 62 years
      After he had patiently endured he obtained the promise"
      The stone is a handsome one and bears what looks like Masonic symbols They may be merely the tools of his trade June 13th 06 I write to Freemasons Hall 60 Great Queen Street London WC2B 5A2 to ask if they have a record of membership and include their non returnble fee of £30 Rather shirty reply no information available Non returnable fee wasted on this dubious organisation
