  • Notes
    • Documents found in Warwick Record Office by researcher Christine Hancock are legal papers to do with the "settlment" of John Goddard around year 1811
John Goddard had a large family and applied for parish relief although he did not have Settlement in his own right The term "settlement" arises from the Act of Settlement of 1662, part of the Poor Laws dating from the reign of Elizabeth the First of England
Persons born in a parish may seek relief there The case gave rise to an argument as to whether the parish of Monks Kirby or the neighbouring Withybrook were responsible It seemed to depend upon whether John's father William had "settlement"and in which parish
These documents supply information on William that we might otherwise not have gleaned e.g. when baptised, when married, and the name of his father Joseph
There are 5 documents including a letter from the Vicar of Monks Kirby to a barrister in London seeking his opinion together with the actual minutes of a later Court hearing in Warwick
It is thought that Withybrook parish lost the argument
