Notes |
- Birth Certificate for Alexander Ross verifies date and time of birth 31st Dec 1870 (Illegiimate) at 4 hours am place Hatton parish of Oyne Father is given as Alexander Ross farm servant Mother is Jane Jaffray Domestic servant Both parents sign the certificate the father giving the address Pittinnan, Parish of Daviot The certificate is dated Jan 21st 1871 and J Mortimer is registrar
Alexander Ross is recorded with his grandparents at Hatton of Ardoyne in the 1881Census He is 10 years old, born Oyne and is being brought up by his grandparents Also in residence is Elsie Cumming granddaughter age 2
I believe this Alexander Ross to be the father of Charles W Ross who farmed at Ardoyne and who is buried at Logie Kirkyard his birth would be abt 1908 and his wife was Jeanie Harvey I need to be able to establish the link between father and son before proceeding further
I now have a birth certificate for Charles William Ross born 10 am 9th Aug 1907 Father is Alexander Ross, farmer and mother is Helen Ross (unmarried surname Moir) They were married 15 June 1900 at Insch To go back one more step needs their Marriage certificate to get the names of his and her parents. If it again transpires that father is Alexander Ross we shall be close to proving the sequence The marriage certificate also should give the ages of both and I would look to our Alexander being 30 years if age
A copy of the marriage certificate is not available from Scotslands people but the Census for 1901 a year on from their wedding gives the confirmation we need This shows Alexander Ross age 30 farmer and his wife Helen age 22 at Hatton I understand from grandson Alexander Harvey Ross that Helen Moir's parents were strongly opposed to the marriage. However with one grandchild born already and another on the way they relented and were probably instrumental in installing them in the farm Hatton of Ardoyne where Alexander was brought up Proir to that he was employed as a horse breaker at Mains of Lethenty They have two children so far, yet another Alexander age 2 and Gladys age 4 months. Charles William Ross has not yet arrived on the scene
Alexander Ross is buried alongside other members of his family in Oyne Kirkyard He died 10th Oct 1957 age 78
The photo is from grandson Harvey's collection
In April 2012 I learn that this couple had 12 children and 10 grew to adulthood
