  • Notes
    • David was born in Rayne in 1890
he emigrated to Canada in 1909 landing in Montreal He worked his way from there to Estevan SK where he wasemployed in the brickyards In 1913 he went west to Alberta There he chose a homestead on Lalbe Creek After a short stay he returned to Estevan where he met Ester Sophia Thorpe They married in 1914
In 1914 shortly after the marriage Dave returned to Alberta to build a shack on his chosen homestead Ester followed in March 1915 with their daughter of five months They travelled by train from Estevan to McLennan the end of the rail track at that time From there it wasa long slow journey by horse and buggy
They settled in a thatched log shack chinked with clay They began to clear land for a garden patch and fields to grow grain They got a cow to feed their young daughter Dorothy Their neighbours gave them a sitting hen with eggs to hatch Thats how the chicken flock was started
Dave worked out and took a team of horses in exchange for wages They lived on the farm till 1948 They grew large garden and field crops and raised livestock along the creek Dave enjoyed the outdoors and spent a lot of time hunting and trapping and appreciated the seclusion of his "cabin" along the banks of the Smoky River
He died suddenly in 1948 and is buried in Falher cemetery
Then in 1949 Ester moved to Nampa to live with her son Ronald The farm was sold to Jos Pelletier in 1956 and is presently owned by Gilbert and Lorene Owens
