  • Notes
    • At the first time of entry this item is speculative This John may be the father of our George
I commission a researcher Irene Buchan to look for the Florence connection Sept 2002
      Irene Reports
On the baptism certificate for our George (11 Aug 1821) it says "John Florence in the parish of Culsalmond had a child born in fornication with Ann Robertson and baptised George"
A search for a marriage between them drew a blank nor were there any other children found
Ann Robertson subsequently married ------------Florence slate quarrier ( this from the death certificate of George along with reputed father John, crofter and gravedigger)
A marriage was found between Ann Robertson and a William Florence 6 Feb 1830, Rhynie and Easie

For a time I followed the wrong John Florence (one suggested by Irene Buchan) However on contacting Tony Christiansen a researcher who has compiled a data base on the Florence family and lives in New Zealand details were passed to Shirley Hartley in Canada who responded "the John you are wondering about was my g-g-grandfather born 1798 in Culsalmond He lived there all his life and was the church officer for almost 50 years He was also known as church beedle (on his death certificate) He died on Feb 23 1873 and is buried in the churchyard along with his wife Mary Stuart Although no marriage certificate has been found the death certificate says "married to Mary Stuart" She stated that they lived in Pulwhite cottage just down the road from the church but this may not be correct
although we know that son James lived there
On his death certificate the place of death is given as Brande of Kirkton Culsalmond cause of death Hypertrophy with dilatation of the heart as certified by Patrick Mitchell MB Ch B
It is clear that this is the real John Florence and is no longer speculative his death certificate also gives his parents James Florence Agricultural Labourer (deceased) and Elspet Florence ms Walker(deceased)
He is buried at Culsalmond Plot 164
