  • Notes
    • The 1881 Alvah census lists George as servant in the household of John Chalmers at Cairnhill his birth date is given as1858 born Boyndie
He marries Mary Florence in 1885 four years on from the Census date

The Census for 6 April 1891 lists George Gray as farmer at Skirts of Foudland in the parish of Insch Aberdeenshire The house has 3 rooms with one or more windows. His age is 31 Four houses are listed under this address no acreages given His wife Mary is listed as age 26 born Oyne and the first 3 children are given as Mary H Gray age 4 George Gray age 3, and Catherine Gray age 1

The 1901 Census gives George Gray age 41 born Banff farmer Skirts of Foudland working on his own account with his wife Mary age 37 born Oyne The children listed are Mary H age 14 born Oyne George age 13 born Keithhall Catherine age 11 born Insch Annie age 9 Alexander M age 8 Charles F age 6 Lucy age 4 and Henry age 2 all born Insch The house now has 5 rooms with one or more windows

George must have been a successful farmer at Skirts of Foundland as he moved on to a fair sized farm at Harthill of Oyne I believe that the need to succeed, the narrow margin between success and failure, turned him into the harsh and difficult man he became
When the family were mostly grown and fled the nest his wife left him moving to a small cottage in Insch
Sadly I never met him and I don't believe he ever had a photograph taken, and I have no idea what he looked like
I understand via my cousin Sandy Stevenson that he ended his days with his daughter Mary Ellen at Bridge of Don Aberdeen and died age 75 in the Royal Cornhill Hospital of dementia, his usual residence given as Strabathie Cottage
