    • The 1881 Census for Leslie lists Mary Florance as a servant in the household of John Geddes The dwelling is given as Hall She is age 16 born Oyne John Geddes is a farmer of 50 acres age 56 employing one man and one girl and he was born Insch His wife Isabella is 73(?) born Oyne and there is a lodger Agnes Mathieson age 52 seller of artificial flowers

      Mary's father George Florence is described as a crofter on his daughters birth certificate Records show 8 Florence children although the first George died at age 7and the name is re-used Mary was the youngest and was born at the family croft of Ryehill at the back of Bennachie Her mother Helen Benzie was also of a crofter family from the back of Bennachie

      She married George Gray and raised 10 children Her husband became a harsh and difficult man and when the children were grown she left him and found a small house at Insch (36 High Street) with her daughter Katie and sometimes her unmarried son Alexander (Sandy) She eeked out her living by knitting stockings for the outfitters Russell specialising in golf socks with elaborate designs for the gentry
      This photo is the only one of her that I know of It has been "lifted" from a group at Insch station and is dated about 1928
