  • Notes
    • Jean worked in a bakery in Inverurie before emigrating to New Zealand in 1917
She brought with her a son Charlie Mutch and she passed him off as her sisters child . She was looking after the boy because her sister had died she claimed
In Palmerston North she lived with Auld Granny (Isabella Alexander) and worked in a local bakery
Auld Granny looked after the boy when his mother was out working and he was off school
She moved to Masterton with the child when she married Jim Smith in 1924
It may seem strange but Jeannie maintained the fiction about the boys birth throughout her long life
Charlie Mutch did not learn the truth until he joined up in the second world war and had to produce a birth certificate When his son was born and he attempted to introduce the infant to his mother she still maintained that it could not be She had no son and therefor no grandson Charlie being a fairly robust character appeared to accept this with equamity and it is my guess that her husband Jim Smith did likewise
