Photos |
 | Leslie Jaffray & Jane Smith Golden Wedding The photograph is supplied by the National Museum of Scotland( Edinburgh EH1 1JF) and is from negative no 51/56/13A It is believed to be of Leslie Jaffray on the occasion of his golden wedding 20th June 1890 The registers show that the date of death and age for Jean Smith are incorrectly shown on her headstone She in fact died a year earlier This casts a doubt on the "Golden wedding" photograph. |

Notes |
- Jane Smith was born 4th May 1819 and christened on the 15th at Chapel of Garioch Her parents were farming in Bogmill Witnesses at the ceremony were George Smith of Tullos and Alexander Thain
A family tradition is that Jane Smith was a descendant of the Smith family of "Mill of Tifties Annie" fame
I have this from Hunter Mitchell and I confess I have never heard this before and I am not inclined to believe it Alice (my sister in law) also says she was told this by my mother
The photo is from the National Museum of Scotland Edinburgh (negative number 51/56/13A) and I have separated the couple depicted If genuine it is their golden wedding photo.
A number of photos were handed to the Museum by Leslie Jaffray Massie a g-grandson along with a collection of tools and harness about 1960 when collectors were canvassing the country districts
Although the death recorded on the family headstone in Logie kirkyard gives a date of death 31 Jan 1891
the Registrar of Oyne Alexander Riddel records her death as 1890 in the parish register Son John Jaffrey is listed as the informant Of the two the registrar's date should be more likely to be correct. This blows the assumption that the couple celebrated their golden wedding or even that the photo of them together is genuine However instances have occurred whereby the new books have been late in arriving at the registrars place of business and they have perforce continued with the old book with its headline dating from the previous year Since we are dealing with an entry close to the change of year this may well be the solution to the puzzle
