Notes |
- The christening of James Jaffray is listed on the old parish registers for Chapel of Garioch 24th of April 1843 (Gros 179/00 0002 No image) Note his name is mispelt as Jeffray His parents are given as Leslie Jaffray and Jane Smith
James Jaffray is listed on the 1851census with his parents Leslie Jaffrey and Jane Smith at Oyne He is age 7 Scholar born Chapel of Garioch
My original date for his marriage to Margaret Whyte was in Dec 1865 and I believe they had three children although the total number is uncertain
A search for the marriage of this couple on "Scotlandspeople" has drawn a blank However a search for daughter Margaret's birth shows an alteration to the parents marriage date from 20 Nov 1865 to 20 Dec 1862 This remains something of a mystery The date change makes James 19 on marriage
The IGI has a date of 20 Dec 1862 place New Pitsligo and I am inclined to accept this His occupation is given as Square Wright (journeyman) on Margaret's birth certificate On his daughters Ann's birth certificate his occupation is given as House carpenter (journeyman)
James Jaffrey is believed to have died in Berwick
A search for his death on Scotlandspeople covering years 1900 to 1940 with a birth date of 1843 all counties produced only one incorrect result (wrong parents ) Berwick can be tricky as it has been under English jurisdiction at times but James and his family seem to have dropped off the radar screen and it has been suggested they may have emigrated I would go for that except for a photograph
I have a photograph from my mothers collection It is of a James Jaffrey and his wife in Berwick They appear to be a well dressed couple and I am inclined to believe that it is of son James but I have no confirmation
Of the three children listed Margaret, James, and Ann appear to be certain as birth/christening certificates are available
