  • Notes
    • Elspet's birth needs to be confirmed She does not appear on the Scotlandspeople site under the new nor the old system From her date of death we can derive year of birth to be 1856 which would clash with her sister Martha There is another possibility
Perhaps Elspet Skene and Martha Skene are one and the same, starting out as Martha and being changed to Elspet (See remarks and birth date for Martha)

Elspet is mother of Elsie Cumming and she lived at Hatton with her parents and daughter Died at comparitively early age of 40
Daughter Elsie's birth certificate gives date of birth as 17th Dec 1878 The father is named as William Cumming of Insch The couple did not marry There is mention of a reprimand in the Oyne church records (Marlene Williamson refers)
The boy William McIntosh brought up alongside Elsie Cumming may have believed Elspet to be his mother and he told his family in New Zealand many years later that his mother died of breast cancer

Her death is registerd April 14th 1896 at 5 hours 15 mins pm in the parish of Oyne age 40 single. Profession is housekeeper Hatton of Ardoyne Cause of death is given as Uterine cancer certified by Patrick Mitchell M D Her brother John Jaffray is the informant Alexander Riddel is Registrar
